Selangor to honour three former greats

By Y.P. SIVAM

Legendary former football greats Datuk Mokhtar Dahari, spiderman R. Arumugam and Ong Yu Tiang will be remembered at the Sultan of Selangor's Cup football competition at the Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow.

The trio have passed away but the organisers have not forgotten their contribution to Selangor.

The organising committee, headed by Datuk Abdul Karim Munisar, has invited their wives – Tengku Zarina Tengku Ibrahim, D. Mariaselvie and Linda Ong – for this year's Sultan of Selangor's Cup.

Besides the trio, the organising committee has also invited about 45 former Selangor players to attend the event.

Each of them will receive a special memento from the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah before the kick-off for the match between the Selangor veterans and Singapore veterans.

This year's Sultan of Selangor's Cup competition is extra special as the organising committee has listed the event as part of the nation's 50th anniversary Merdeka celebrations.

Sultan Sharafuddin had initiated the tournament in 2001 to foster better relations between Selangor and Singapore. It was then known as the Regent of Selangor Cup. The competition was renamed the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup in 2003.

The match between the Selangor veterans and their Singapore counterparts will be the curtainraiser.

The main match will be the annual clash between the Selangor selection and S-League selection. The winner of the annual match will receive the majestic challenge trophy, which Sultan Sharafuddin had purchased specially from London.

The organisers are expecting a crowd of about 50,000 to be part of the celebrations. To make the atmosphere a lot merrier, 50,000 Jalur Gemilang flags will be distributed to the crowd.
