ULU KELANG: Whoever says the Gunners are trophyless this season has never been to the UK...Ulu Kelang that is. Arsenal were crowned Under-12 champions in the Third Ulu Kelang Recreational Club (UKRC) International Under-10 & Under-12 Soccer 7s yesterday, beating Malaysian side, Soccer Kids, by a solitary goal.
The goalscorer was Benjamin Davis.
This team — JSSL Arsenal from Singapore — made their first appearance in this annual event.
In the Under-10 category, CIMB YFA (Malaysia) beat another team from Singapore, Bravehearts, 2-0.
Amal Hazman scored a brace.
"This is brilliant. The boys have been looking forward to this trip ever since they learnt we would be travelling to Kuala Lumpur. The kids have been having a lot of fun," said Arsenal coach Marcel Elessa.
"It's interesting to play against opponents you're not familiar with...different cultures and different styles of play. The exposure these kids got from this tournament is priceless."
The two-day tournament saw teams from KL, Selangor, Penang, Singapore and Japan giving it their all to be crowned champions.
UKRC president Andrew Gopal said: "I'm very pleased with the outcome of this year's tournament. The response has been great."
He pointed out the tournament was a great platform for young footballers to showcase their talent.
"When they emerge champions, it will immediately boost their confidence. Those who are thinking about making a career out of playing football will be encouraged to pursue their ambition. Those who lost will want to be better. So, it is win-win for everyone," added Andrew.

Golden boy Amal makes mum proud
ULU KELANG: There were some delightful talents among those who took part in the UKRC Under-10 & Under-12 Soccer 7s but none shone like a beacon as Amal Hazim Hazman (pic).
It was a special day for the 10-year-old as not only did his team CIMB YFA emerge champions in the Under-10 category, Amal scored both goals in the final against Bravehearts of Singapore.
That also made him the topscorer in the category.
"I am so happy as not only my team were crowned champions but as a bonus I also got the Golden Boot award," said the very excited lad.
The hardcore Manchester United supporter picked up the game four years ago.
"I've always loved playing football, and my parents have been supportive. They take me for training and are always there when I play matches."
His mother, Suhaidah Ishak, 39, cheered for Amal throughout his games.
"He has made me very proud today and we are happy for him that he scored two goals," she said.
"Everyday he would be on the field playing football or even when he is at home. Since he showed so much interest in the game, his father brought him to join this club."
Amal, whose dream is to play for the national team, was assured of the support from his parents.
"We will be with him and support him till he achieves his ambitions. Whatever he wants to do, he will have our blessing," added Suhaidah.
